Cleaning Your Carpet Filter
My carpet doesn't have a filter, does it? Well not really, but it does function like a filter. For reasons I'll explain later, this filtering is very beneficial. Have you ever really thought about what is really being collected, tracked through and spilled into your carpets? The most common household pollutants are; dirt, dust, pollens, stear...ic acid, pet dander, asphalt, sand, smoke residues, hydrocarbons, mites, tar, bacteria, foods, drinks, fungus, and some times viruses. Quite a few eh! The hydrocarbons come from outdoor pollution and your appliances; stearic acids come from cooking food. How many of these common everyday pollutants would you say are not in your carpets and upholstery this very minute? Not a pleasant thought is it? You might say... not my carpets they are clean. Perhaps, but carpets are designed to hide soil from your eyes. Keeping it trapped below the surface where it does the most harm. Not convinced? Do a little test. Place a new bag inside your vacuum; thoroughly vacuum all your carpets. When done remove the bag and cut it open and take a look at what really inside your visually clean carpets.
Now considering that all of this disgusting stuff is in your carpet, and more is likely to be brought in everyday, eventually the carpet will become full. As you walk across your carpets you re-distribute the dust and pollutants back into the air you and your family breathe. As a result of being full, your carpets will also begin to appear visually dirty. This visual soil may take upwards of 1-2 years before it finally shows itself. By then it has done a lot of damage to your carpet, and has contributed to greatly having poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
What Can Be Done?
Well for starters you really should clean your carpets and flooring more often. Shaw Industries the worlds largest carpet manufacturer, recommends, that you have your carpets professionally cleaned every 6 to12 months, just to maintain the warranty. Comprehensive scientific studies have proven that by simply cleaning your carpets you will drastically improve the indoor air quality of your home, making it a healthier place for you and your family. Consider this... most of us wear our clothes once and then place in the laundry for washing, yet our carpets and upholstery go unwashed for as much as 1-3 years or more. Can you imagine wearing the same pair of socks for a week, let alone 1-3 years? Your carpets are subjected to far more pollutants on a daily basis han a pair of socks, yet most of us do not clean our carpet regularly. View your carpets for what they are, a soft, warm, and comfortable pollution filter, that requires maintenance and cleaning. Ideally in addition to frequent vacuuming and spot cleaning, your carpets should be professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. As mentioned at the beginning, the benefit of having a carpet filter in your home will result in less airborne dust and pollutants in your home. A simple comparison: Two identical homes, with the same number of family members and traffic patterns. One has carpet throughout and the other tile and wood floors only. With or without the AC or furnace running, which house would you say has a better indoor air quality? If you said the house with the tiled floors you are incorrect. Why? Without the benefit of a carpet to trap the indoor dust and pollutants, they would re-circulate constantly throughout the house. More so if the AC or heater was operating. All of these circulating pollutants contaminate the breathing air mass.
The tiled house still needs to be swept, vacuumed, dust and mopped almost daily, and still needs a professional tile and grout cleaning every 12-24 months to keep up with the pollutants and dust circulating through the house. Studies have revealed that most homes indoor air is more polluted than the outside air. Is yours?
Keep up on the dry particulate soil, especially in here in Southern Nevada, by investing in an efficent vacuum cleaner. Make sure it comes with a HEPA filter to capture the very small particles that normally go right through most vacuums and right back into the room. By frequent and thoroughly vacuuming your carpets you can remove as much as 70% of the dust and pollutants that exist in your carpets. The remaining 30% is usually trapped within the carpet fibers, or has bonded to the sticky, wet soils. Thus the need for professional carpet cleaning. The key to carpet longevity is through maintenance.

Using the dry method to clean your carpet is some what of a new technology and way of cleaning carpet. When the term "Dry" is used, it is mostly correct. There is some low moisture products used during the cleaning, this allows carpet dries in 1 hour or less. This is great for very high heat places where people need carpet cleaners example: Las Vegas, or high humidity places. You don't want any mildew to form because the carpet stays wet for hours. This is one of the major benefits of Dry Carpet Cleaning.

2. Eco-Friendly cleaning products. Most dry carpet cleaners will use all natural or biodegradable and eco-friendly products in their cleaning process. These are usually known as micro sponges. Micro sponges are produced by a company known as HOST. They are a member of the professional cleaners association and the product is sold nation wide. The micro sponges are made out of orange peel extract or different natural products. They are very low moisture and look like sawdust basically when they go down on the carpet. 3. Deep Cleaning of Fibers. Dry Cleaners use bristles in their machines instead of pads. Pads are usually used by a steam cleaner and only clean the top of carpet. Bristles are very important to use in the cleaning process for dry, because they deep clean from the bottom of fibers to the top of fibers. Makes for a great deep cleaning. Deep Cleaning is all that is offered by this method.
4. Stains are removed, period. When cleaned with this process, stains don't come back. Since no soap is used in the cleaning process, there are no residues to attract dirt to those stains. When you have carpet cleaned using steam cleaning, the soap that is left in there, brings those stains back up. Also since Steam Cleaning only cleans the surface of the carpet, its not hitting the fibers where it is most important for removing the stain. If you have tough stains, dry carpet cleaning would be the most effective way of getting them out. It is best to make sure which ever professional company you hire, that they include stain removal with the cleaning. If they do not, find one that does! 10 Carpet Cleaning Tips
1) Keep outside dirt outside. More then 80 percent of the soil and moisture on indoor carpet is tracked in as people walk into buildings. Keep building exteriors clean so that less dirt ends up inside.
2) Place and maintain walk-off mats. Mats, at least 12-15 feet long, should be placed at all building entries to absorb soil and moisture before it gets on indoor carpeting.
3) Vacuum more to clean less. Vacuum all high-traffic areas, entries, and main hallways more often. Vacuuming not only removes dry soil, but it also keeps it from becoming airborne and spreading, covering desks, cabinets and surfaces.
4) Use efficient vacuum cleaners. Commercial, high-efficiency vacuum cleaners in good working order are essential to good carpet care. Vacuums with HEPA air-filtration systems help keep the indoor air clean and the environment healthy
5) Have a spot-removal program in place, weekly or monthly. Also, keep a plan in place to deal with the build-up of ice melt or salt in carpets. More frequent deep cleaning will be required if you are in a snowy climate.
6) Focus on the lower floors first. Spend more time and effort cleaning and vacuuming lower floors. Soil removed on the lower floors has less chance of traveling throughout the building.
7) Carpet stairs and elevators. Stairs and elevators are among the first areas to collect tracked-in dirt. Carpeting these areas helps trap dirt, and frequent vacuuming will keep it from moving throughout the facility.
8) Deep clean with hot-water extraction. Hot-water extraction is generally recognized as the best way to revitalize and deep clean carpet. Heat is essential in all cleaning. To be most effective, the carpet cleaning solution should be at least 212 degrees Fahrenheit at the wand tip. As a general guideline, hot-water extraction should be carried out two to three times per year depending on traffic, area and use.
9) Pre-spray and then groom. Pre-spray visibly soiled and spotted areas on carpets and then agitate with a carpet groomer or rake. Allow 5 to 10 minutes of dwell time to loosen and emulsify soiled areas.
10) Involve the building’s tenants. An effective carpet maintenance involves the building’s occupants. The more actively involved building users are in the cleanliness and maintenance of their own facility the more likely the building’s carpets will stay clean and the building healthy.
