Many sites are competing to be on the top of google. You should be considered with this to. Sites usually on the first page of google will get the most hits, and therefore, business. It always helps to google your keyword for your business to see what page and where you appear on google search results. Think about it, if someone is looking for a carpet cleaning business in las vegas they are more likely to type into google: carpet cleaning las vegas
Find out the keyword that is most searched for your business. Now that you have that keyword begin to work on it by following the steps below. This is why I said even the average site owner can begin to do there own Internet Marketing.
Step 1: Begin submitting your site to free web directories. You can google these or here are some examples; yelp.com whitepages.com; merchantcircle.com. This is a free way to get your site listed on the web. Make sure to fill out all the information in these directories. If it asks for a picture, upload a picture. Be sure your address and phone number are correct in every listing you post. This will be important for your google places search.
Step 2: List your business on Google Places, Maps.com and other local search results. Bing.com and Yahoo.com are also important. Most of the time with these places listings you need to verify them. This can take a week or two while Google and Bing send you a verification code via mail to make sure it is the correct address. These are very beneficial when you begin to be ranked. When people type in a local search result like carpet cleaners in las vegas you want your local business ranking to come up at the top.
Step 3: Start networking with other businesses in your industry. If they are not providing the same service as you do, but are within the industry ie: carpet cleaning and maid service. Try to link with them. Ask if they would like to exchange links. Therefore: you put their link on your site and you link on theirs. Don't do to many of these link exchanges but a total of 10 will help with your rankings.
Step 4: Forum postings and blog postings. If you have the time, you need to sit down and google forum boards or blogs related to you industry. Since you are an expert in your industry you can begin your own blog. Write about what you know. Blogs are very important because not only are you providing information to people, but you including your own keywords and links in these blogs. blogspot.com is a great site to begin your own blog at. Just like reading hubpages, you can create your own informative blog. In regards to forums, make sure forum boards allow dofollow links when you are posting on them. Best way to find out more information about dofollow is to google this method.
Step 5: Do not pay for links. Paying for links can hurt your business and you can also get banned for it. This is just like why you wouldn't spam your link through a forum board, because usually the administrators will ban you from the board and remove your links anyways. Just a waste of your time then! Work hard and put about 10 hours into SEO work on your site per week. If this is to much, then you may want to consider hiring someone to help you out with this side of the business.
These are just a few tips for the beginning process of getting your website noticed on the internet. As you can see, there are many different ways to do your Internet Marketing. The 5 steps above are only scratching the surface of ways you can begin to advertise your company online. Beware of websites asking you to pay and emails from people offering SEO services. Sometimes these are more costly then beneficial to your business!
